South African music has always been known for its rhythmic elements, but one of the Sandance headliners Goldfish are arguably one of the first to blend those styles with dance music.

The Cape Town duo, who are performing tomorrow at 10.40pm, have built a solid reputation as a popular touring act. Goldfish’s David Poole says their country’s musical influences allow them to stand out from the pack.

“It is really important to be unique in some way,” he says. “There is a Goldfish sound where we try to be original because once you rehash, you realise somebody has done it better than you.”

The band’s calling card is their live show which features guests vocalists and both members swapping instruments including the double bass, saxophones, keyboards and flute.

“It’s all about being in the moment for us,” Poole says.

“We want to create live dance music that is not just press play and put your hands in the air.”
