French singer Charles Aznavour has died at the age of 94, French media reported on Monday, citing his spokesman.

Aznavour, who was born Shahnour Varinag Aznavourian in Paris to Armenian immigrants who fled to France, sold more than 100 million records in 80 countries.

He wrote more than 800 songs during his illustrious career and was often described as France's Frank Sinatra. He was popular across the French speaking world.

Aznavour played a set at Dubai's World Trade Centre in 2016: "I will sing in French, Italian, Spanish, English and Russian, so I hope you are sitting next to a translator," he said on the night, winking at the crowd at Dubai World Trade Centre's Sheikh Rashid Hall, while dressed in a sleek black suit.
