Aziz Maraka has been turning regional music industry heads with his evocative songwriting. On Friday, September 20, the Jordanian musician made his UAE debut with a performance at the Cultural Foundation theatre in Abu Dhabi.
The popular singer put up this Instagram video of the Abu Dhabi performance - which seemed well-received, to say the least.
Known for his innovative Arabic rock-jazz musical style, Maraka delivered some of his biggest hits as well as new music, performed live for the first time, much to the audience's delight. His lovingly composed folk songs and ballads marry Levantine melodies with the classical music training Maraka received as a child.
Maraka has European and debut North American tours on the cards this year, too. Despite his increasing stature as a musician, he has rebuffed all offers to join major labels so far. "Listen, I am doing this because I don't want to have a typical job," he told The National. "I don't want to work for a company. I am my own boss and that is such a privilege," he says. "That's the thing I don't understand about joining a label. Sure, they can help you make it, but surely you want to enjoy the journey at the same time."

From Beirut and Amman to London and now Dubai, hairstylist George Massoud has seen the same mistakes made by customers all over the world. In the chair or at-home hair care, here are the resolutions he wishes his customers would make for the year ahead.
1. 'I will seek consultation from professionals'
You may know what you want, but are you sure it’s going to suit you? Haircare professionals can tell you what will work best with your skin tone, hair texture and lifestyle.
2. 'I will tell my hairdresser when I’m not happy'
Massoud says it’s better to offer constructive criticism to work on in the future. Your hairdresser will learn, and you may discover how to communicate exactly what you want more effectively the next time.
3. ‘I will treat my hair better out of the chair’
Damage control is a big part of most hairstylists’ work right now, but it can be avoided. Steer clear of over-colouring at home, try and pursue one hair brand at a time and never, ever use a straightener on still drying hair, pleads Massoud.

What are NFTs?
Are non-fungible tokens a currency, asset, or a licensing instrument? Arnab Das, global market strategist EMEA at Invesco, says they are mix of all of three.
You can buy, hold and use NFTs just like US dollars and Bitcoins. “They can appreciate in value and even produce cash flows.”
However, while money is fungible, NFTs are not. “One Bitcoin, dollar, euro or dirham is largely indistinguishable from the next. Nothing ties a dollar bill to a particular owner, for example. Nor does it tie you to to any goods, services or assets you bought with that currency. In contrast, NFTs confer specific ownership,” Mr Das says.
This makes NFTs closer to a piece of intellectual property such as a work of art or licence, as you can claim royalties or profit by exchanging it at a higher value later, Mr Das says. “They could provide a sustainable income stream.”
This income will depend on future demand and use, which makes NFTs difficult to value. “However, there is a credible use case for many forms of intellectual property, notably art, songs, videos,” Mr Das says.
