Dr Who fans in the region were left in despair today thanks to the announcement that Karen Gillan, aka the much-loved Dr's assistant Amy Pond, has been forced to cancel her appearance at this year's MEFCC.
The actress, who also plays Nebula in Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy, apologised to fans via a video posted on MEFCC's Twitter, blaming a "scheduling conflict" for her cancellation. She added that she hoped to be able to attend a future event, and had been looking forward to her first visit to Dubai.

Gillan joins Game of Thrones star Carice Von Houten on this year's "apologies" list.

Van Houten cancelled a number of ComicCon appearances, including Dubai, earlier this month due to work commitments. The cancellations came following rumours that Von Houten's Red Witch, who was last seen sailing off into the distance warned "never to return" to Westeros in Season 7 of Game of Thrones, was back on set after posts on social media placed her close to the show's main Northern Irish shooting location.

Con-goers needn't be too distraught though. This year's line-up of celebrity guests still includes Kristian Nairn, aka Hodor from Game of Thrones, Stranger Things' Natalia Dyer, who plays Nancy Wheeler in the hit Netflix teen sci-fi, and the one and only Karl Urban, the man behind the helmet of Judge Dredd as well as Leonard 'Bones' McCoy in Star Trek.

You can also spend the 30 minutes you’d planned to spend lining up for Gillan’s signature checking out the work of local comic and pop artists at the Artists’ Alley, taking part in a workshop on film making or animation, or checking out the bands and cosplayers on the MEFCC main stage.

MEFCC takes place from April 5-7. For ticket info, latest line up details and further information, visit www.mefcc.com
