A galaxy far, far away just got a little closer, with the opening of the highly anticipated Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge at Disneyland, California on May 29.

Director George Lucas, stars Billy Dee Williams (Lando Calrissian) and Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker) and Disney's chief executive Robert Iger were all there for the launch. But fans were delighted when Harrison Ford popped out of the Millennium Falcon to surprise them.

"Is there someone who knows how to fix this thing?" Iger says, when the Falcon appears to start playing up.

Ford then comes out to enormous cheers.

"Peter, this one’s for you," he said in reference to Peter Mayhew, who played Chewbacca and died in April this year.

Fans were, unanimously, geeking out at the launch. But one very famous fan was spotted looking particularly delighted in the crowd: Brie Larson.

"Of all the awesome things to see, Brie Larson nerding out was among my favourite," The Hollywood Reporter journalist Ryan Parker wrote on Twitter.

Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge is a new 14-acre land at the Disney theme parks, featuring rides and experiences that take visitors into the world of the most recent Star Wars trilogy.

The new rides include, Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run, a simulator ride in which guests pilot the Millennium Falcon, and Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance, a dark ride in which guests are involved in a battle between the First Order and the Resistance. There is also Star Wars-themed food and shopping outlets, to fully immerse guests into the Star Wars world.

The park at Anaheim, California officially opens to the public tomorrow, while another Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge-themed zone will open in Orlando, Florida later this summer.
