It was a big night for Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time ... in Hollywood at the Critics' Choice Awards on Sunday, January 12. Seemingly setting its standing as an Oscars front-runner, the movie was given the Best Picture nod at the Santa Monica awards ceremony, as well as Best Supporting Actor for Brad Pitt – could this be the year he finally gets an Oscar? – Best Original Screenplay and Best Production Design.
Many of the big winners echoed those of the Golden Globes last week. Joaquin Phoenix won Best Actor for Joker, and Renee Zellweger won Best Actress for her role in Judy.
The Best Director award went to not one, but two filmmakers. Sam Mendes was given the nod for his First World War odyssey 1917, and he also took home editing and cinematography awards, while Bong Joon-ho also won for Parasite. The movie was also was named best foreign-language film.
The awards also honour television accomplishments. Fleabag and Succession continued to reign as awards season darlings, taking home Best Comedy Series and Best Drama Series respectively. Phoebe Waller-Bridge won Best Actress in a Comedy Series for her titular role in Fleabag, and Andrew Scott was named Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series. Of the Succession cast members, Jeremy Strong was named Best Actor in a Drama Series.
Michelle Williams's triumphant run for her role in Fosse / Verdon continued, as she was named Best Actress in a Limited Series or Movie Made for Television. Jharrel Jerome from Netflix's When They See Us won Best Actor in a Limited Series or Movie Made for Television.
Ava DuVernay's Netflix series, When They See Us , which was controversially left off the Golden Globes nominees list also won Best Limited Series.
