Last week, Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt confirmed that he had been battling cancer. Today, he has announced that he is "victorious" and healthy.

"The last few weeks were [a] very difficult time for my family and me," he wrote in a message, which he posted to Twitter. "But like they say, God gives the hardest battles to his strongest soldiers. And today, on the occasion of my kid's birthday, I am happy to come out victorious from this battle and be able to give them the best gift I can – the health and well-being of our family.

"This wouldn't have been possible without the unwavering faith and support from all of you. I am eternally grateful to my family, friends and all of the fans who have stood by me and been my source of strength through this trying time. Thank you for the love, kindness and countless blessings that you have sent my way."

He also thanked the medical team who have been treating him at Kokilaben Hospital in Mumbai.

He wrote: "I am especially grateful to Dr Sewanti and her team of doctors, nurses and the medical staff at Kokilaben Hospital who have taken such good care of me in the last few weeks. Humbled and grateful."

Dutt, 61, is father to three children, Trishala, 32, and 10-year-old twins, Iqra and Shahraan. He is married to former actress Maanayata, 42.

Last week he spoke publicly about his cancer diagnosis for the first time, saying: "I'll beat it."

In a video posted to Aalim Hakim's Instagram, Dutt thanked his barber for a great haircut, and then asks the camera to zoom in on a scar on his eyebrow and hairline.

"This is a recent scar of my life, but I’ll beat it," he says. "I’ll be out of this cancer soon."

Mumbai resident Hakim is a barber to the stars.

In the video, Dutt also said that he is growing his beard for a role in KGF Chapter 2, and confirms that he will be back on set in November, saying: "It feels good to be back and good to be in the role."

On his own Instagram, he posted a series of post-haircut photos, with the caption: "Gearing up for #Adheera! #KGFChapter2".
