Angelina Jolie could be set to make her Marvel debut — which would be her first time portraying a superhero on screen.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the actress is currently in talks with Marvel Studios to star in The Eternals.

The movie is set to be a "team adventure" film, with director Chloe Zhao at the helm, and tells the story of the Eternals, a race of near-immortal beings who live on Earth.

The project is being written by Matthew and Ryan Firpo, and is based on the comic book series by Jack Kirby.

Stranger Things star Millie Bobby Brown and The Beast's Luke Evans have also both been connected to the project, which is expected to come out in 2020.

Although it's her first superhero movie, it's not Jolie's first foray into supernatural or comic book genres. The mother-of-six has played the title character in Disney (Marvel's parent company) production Maleficent; and she also played Fox in the 2008 adaptation of Mark Millar's comic, Wanted.

Who would Angelina Jolie play?

It hasn't taken Marvel fans long to start speculating which role Jolie would take in the movie adaptation of The Eternals.

Insiders have told The Hollywood Reporter that the plot could focus on a love story between Ikaris "a man fuelled by cosmic energy" and Sersi, "who relishes moving among humans". Sersi is also one of the Eternals who goes on to become an Avenger in the comic series.

Naturally, fans have jumped to the conclusion that Jolie will be playing Sersi.

Fans react to the news

Although the news hasn't been 100 per cent confirmed, the rumours have gone down well with Marvel fans on Twitter..
