Yasser Elsheshtawy, the curator of Transformations: The Emirati National House, the exhibition presented by the National Pavilion UAE at the 2016 edition of the Venice Biennale, will speak at a series of public events at some of the UAE’s leading cultural centres throughout October.

He will talk at Nadi Al Qouz in Alserkal Avenue this weekend and then at New York University Abu Dhabi Institute next weekend and as part of Dubai Design Week at d3 at the end of the month

“For the 2016 edition of the Venice Biennale, the National Pavilion UAE presented an exhibition exploring the history and interesting contemporary life of the Sha’bī house, thoroughly researched and thoughtfully curated by Yasser Elsheshtawy,” says Khulood Al Atiyat, Manager of Arts, Culture and Heritage at the Salama bint Hamdan Al Nahyan Foundation, who support the National Pavilion. “We were able to share this fascinating story with the prestigious international audience of the Biennale, and are very pleased that audiences in the UAE will engage with the exhibition’s content through a series of talks held in collaboration with some of the UAE’s leading cultural centers.”

Yasser Elsheshtawy is Associate Professor of Architecture at the UAE University, Al Ain, and a noted expert on regional architecture and urban development. “I am honoured to have been asked to speak and consider this to be a real testament to the National Pavilion UAE’s growing reputation as an entity central to the UAE’s cultural offering,” he says.

The Bio

Favourite holiday destination: Either Kazakhstan or Montenegro. I’ve been involved in events in both countries and they are just stunning.

Favourite book: I am a huge of Robin Cook’s medical thrillers, which I suppose is quite apt right now. My mother introduced me to them back home in New Zealand.

Favourite film or television programme: Forrest Gump is my favourite film, that’s never been up for debate. I love watching repeats of Mash as well.

Inspiration: My late father moulded me into the man I am today. I would also say disappointment and sadness are great motivators. There are times when events have brought me to my knees but it has also made me determined not to let them get the better of me.
