The General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) has announced the winner of its Instagram competition UAE Aviation Art. This year is the first year of the project and first prize went to Abdelaziz Khalfan Alkindi, an aircraft engineer at Emirates for his picture of a father and son gazing through an airport window at a plane emblazoned with patriotic white, red, green and black.

His image captured the hearts of the GCAA judges with its original approach to the competition theme – aviation – and honest portrayal of an authentic moment.

Saif Mohammed Al Suwaidi, the director general of the GCAA, said: “The inaugural UAE Aviation Art Competition has been highly successful in engaging the UAE community and bringing out the youth’s enthusiasm about the exciting aviation industry. Looking at the range of entries we received has been a fascinating experience that has given us insight into how differently and creatively people interact with and render the world of aviation.”

The winning entry was selected from a shortlist of the top 20 most popular submissions following a month-long campaign, which attracted more than 850 entries.

Mr Alkindi was awarded a return pair of tickets on Etihad Airways to anywhere in the world for his first prize. The two runners up, Tamer Nzha and Hussain Kamra, won Xperia 3 Z3 smartphones from Sony Mobile.

The best 20 images will be on display in a public exhibition held at the Al Mahatta Museum in Sharjah. Build on the site of the UAE’s first airport, the Al Mahatta Museum aims to illustrate the country’s impressive aviation history and growth to the UAE’s youth.
