Photojournalist Nicolas Mingasson has always been fascinated with people living in extreme situations. He has worked previously in Bosnia, Afghanistan and Tibet but in 2008, he dedicated nine months to living and working beyond the limits of the Arctic Circle, collecting a series of portraits of characters of some of the worlds Nothern-most populations. The results are being exhibited in Dubai in a show titled Arctic Sentinels as part of a Climate Change series of events initiated by Alliance Française Dubai ahead of the COP21 conference in Paris in November 2015. The images, which include compelling portraits of a family of reindeer herders and fishermen as well as stunning landscapes are being exhibited both at the Alliance Francaise main venue in Oud Metha as well as at Plantation, in the Sofitel on Dubai's The Walk, JBR.
Through this work, Mingasson tries to set a meeting point between these populations living at the edge of the liveable world and us all. They are our sentinels, the first ones to deal with climate changes and their frightening effects.
* Entry is free to both exhibitions that run until October 31.
