ABU DHABI // A Syrian suffering kidney failure is in dire need of funds to cover the cost of weekly dialysis treatment that is keeping him alive.
Mohammed Jumma, 56, who lost his job and has used up his small savings, will die if he is unable to continue the treatment that he has been having for the past two years.
“Ever since, I have been going for dialysis four times a week,” he says. “I can only afford Monday’s dialysis session. I have asked every charity for help and Dar Al Ber has supported my treatment for a long time but there are other people in need and they can’t cover my entire treatment.”
Mr Jumma also cannot go back to his home country because of the war. He lives in Dubai with his wife and eight-year-old daughter, who has been told to leave school because her parents cannot afford the cost of her tuition.
“We have nowhere to turn to. I’ll find a job to support my daughter but I need help with dialysis,” Mr Jumma says.
Three months of dialysis treatment costs Dh40,000, not including medication.
Dr Al Ber is asking The National's readers to help.
Hisham Al Zahrani, manager of zakat and social services at Dar Al Ber, says: “Charities and Dar Al Ber have helped cover the cost of dialysis up until now but we do not have the funds to pay for future dialysis.
“Monday is the last paid dialysis session. Mr Jumma needs to go four times a week for five hours, otherwise his life is at risk.”
Mr Jumma does not have health insurance and is receiving treatment at a hospital in Dubai. He will not be permitted to continue his treatment unless he pays the fees.
