1. Saddest split

All good things come to an end, though we wish that in the case of Andy Murray and Amelie Mauresmo, it did not have to be quite this soon. Murray announced this week the mutual end of their unique union after two years that might not have won him any Slams, but did improve him as a clay-courter. In any case, this is a conversation tennis needed to continue, so that it can catch up to something approaching the modern age in their views on gender equality.

2. Best return

No prizes for guessing this one. Sixteen minutes, the final ones of the game, 5 of 7 from three-point range, 10 of 14 shooting overall and a total of 27 points, including 17 in the five-minute overtime stretch, a record for the most points in overtime in the history of the game? This was how Stephen Curry returned from a knee sprain that saw him miss four play-off games (to go with an ankle sprain just before that).

3. Best figures

As a general rule, 24 deliveries is not a long time for a bowler to do something. For a batsman sure – in 24 balls you can nearly get to a hundred if things go your way. Bowlers? Not really. So Adam Zampa’s 6-19 in the Indian Premier League (IPL) – the second-best figures in the tournament’s history – for the Rising Pune Supergiants needs to be lauded regardless of context. Plenty of bowlers have taken six wickets in a four-over quota in T20s but that does not make it any less special each time it happens.

4. Highest-profile resignation

Michel Platini stepping down from the UEFA post was pretty big. But given the charges against him and the punishments, that was a ceremonial demotion: in truth he was gone a while back. The resignation of Shashank Manohar as the head of the Indian board is probably a little more noteworthy though that too was expected. Manohar wants to become the head of the International Cricket Council (ICC) for which he could not hold the India post. Still, that does not reduce the significance of the decision.

5. Best raid

Another German season comes to an end and duly Bayern Munich make a raid for a big Borussia Dortmund star. It has become an annual ritual; this time the champions have bought Mats Hummels for a cool £30 million. Hummels is the third big name in three years to cross over, following Mario Gotze and Robert Lewandowski. It will be of no consolation to Dortmund that Hummels is returning home – it was from Bayern that he came, initially on loan, in 2008.
