German art collective Rimini Protokoll has created Remote Abu Dhabi, the most recent in a series of site-specific participatory art performances as part of their ongoing initiative for the city of Abu Dhabi. The trip through downtown Abu Dhabi addresses the reality of cities of the future, inspired by online games and artificial intelligence.
Each two-hour performance guides up to 50 participants on a tour of the city through a curated sequence of indoor and outdoor venues at familiar and unexpected locations, seeing them come to life as if on the set of an imaginary film. A computer-generated voice speaks in English or Arabic through headphones.
“This performative experience will turn Abu Dhabi itself into an artwork,” says Michelle Farrell, Abu Dhabi Art Programmes Manager Abu Dhabi Tourism & Culture Authority. “The concept explores human relationships with others, with technology and with the built environment around us, in a highly original form that has appeared in ever-evolving iterations in cities around the world and connects with Abu Dhabi’s vision of developing a rich cultural and creative ecosystem.”
