New York-based designer Reem Acra paid a flying visit to Dubai this week to address the fashion community in her capacity as board member of the Dubai Design & Fashion Council. Here's a sneak preview of our full interview with the Lebanese couturier which will appear in Thursday's edition of Arts & Lifestyle.
Welcome back to the region Reem, tell me about the ready-to-wear collection you’ve just rolled out.
The inspiration was, American singer-songwriter, Stevie Nicks — she is one of my favourite people. She’s an artist in every true way and she was my muse. I had to embody her personality and become her to be able to design the collection and it came with ease. It was so much fun, I was the happiest ever when I was designing this collection.
Does she know she was your muse and has she seen the collection?
Yes, she knows but she was in Atlanta when we tried to reach her to invite her to the show. She has her tour and is very busy. Everything about the collection is about this ‘modern gypsy girl’ who is so deep inside and has an individual style. She’s like a fairy — the pieces are luxurious and bohemian with a very modern twist.
What do you think is your unique selling point as a designer?
I’m a woman and I understand the body very well. I know how to enhance a woman’s body, making the best out of it. Silhouettes change over time and today we’re very body conscious and when people like celebrities send me photos I can fit them with my eye straight away. I know what cuts will flatter and how they should be properly measured and fitted.
Do you have a favourite colour palette to work with?
I was the designer to originally introduce hints of colours to bridal gowns but I’m also known in my ready-to-wear and couture collections to always have something in gold. It’s in my aura and always around me.
You mentioned in your talk in Dubai as a board member of the Dubai Design & Fashion Council that aspiring designers shouldn’t try an emulate other brands and create collections purely on the basis of what they think the consumer wants to buy. Have you witnessed many designers launch and fail because of that?
Those brands came and went in a flash. So fast you won’t have even felt their impact. At my level I don’t see this anymore, perhaps when I first started but now not so much. That’s why it’s important to have something so entirely different to anything else out there and be true to yourself.
How would you describe the level of creativity and execution you’ve seen with the work of Dubai’s aspiring designers this week?
It’s hard to say we have ‘a standard’ yet, to be honest. The industry is still at the very beginning and I think there is room for designers to emerge. They just need to dig deeper and find the elements which will make them ‘a brand’. We all know the retail market here in Dubai, and the region, one of the best in the world. That is already presenting a huge opportunity for these designers — it’s perfect. So, with the consumer right in front of them, now it’s just a case of how they’re going to find the other elements to attract them.
A new relationship with the old country
Treaty of Friendship between the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and the United Arab Emirates
The United kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and the United Arab Emirates; Considering that the United Arab Emirates has assumed full responsibility as a sovereign and independent State; Determined that the long-standing and traditional relations of close friendship and cooperation between their peoples shall continue; Desiring to give expression to this intention in the form of a Treaty Friendship; Have agreed as follows:
ARTICLE 1 The relations between the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and the United Arab Emirates shall be governed by a spirit of close friendship. In recognition of this, the Contracting Parties, conscious of their common interest in the peace and stability of the region, shall: (a) consult together on matters of mutual concern in time of need; (b) settle all their disputes by peaceful means in conformity with the provisions of the Charter of the United Nations.
ARTICLE 2 The Contracting Parties shall encourage education, scientific and cultural cooperation between the two States in accordance with arrangements to be agreed. Such arrangements shall cover among other things: (a) the promotion of mutual understanding of their respective cultures, civilisations and languages, the promotion of contacts among professional bodies, universities and cultural institutions; (c) the encouragement of technical, scientific and cultural exchanges.
ARTICLE 3 The Contracting Parties shall maintain the close relationship already existing between them in the field of trade and commerce. Representatives of the Contracting Parties shall meet from time to time to consider means by which such relations can be further developed and strengthened, including the possibility of concluding treaties or agreements on matters of mutual concern.
ARTICLE 4 This Treaty shall enter into force on today’s date and shall remain in force for a period of ten years. Unless twelve months before the expiry of the said period of ten years either Contracting Party shall have given notice to the other of its intention to terminate the Treaty, this Treaty shall remain in force thereafter until the expiry of twelve months from the date on which notice of such intention is given.
IN WITNESS WHEREOF the undersigned have signed this Treaty.
DONE in duplicate at Dubai the second day of December 1971AD, corresponding to the fifteenth day of Shawwal 1391H, in the English and Arabic languages, both texts being equally authoritative.

The rules on fostering in the UAE
A foster couple or family must:
- be Muslim, Emirati and be residing in the UAE
- not be younger than 25 years old
- not have been convicted of offences or crimes involving moral turpitude
- be free of infectious diseases or psychological and mental disorders
- have the ability to support its members and the foster child financially
- undertake to treat and raise the child in a proper manner and take care of his or her health and well-being
- A single, divorced or widowed Muslim Emirati female, residing in the UAE may apply to foster a child if she is at least 30 years old and able to support the child financially

Key findings of Jenkins report

'Worse than a prison sentence'
Marie Byrne, a counsellor who volunteers at the UAE government's mental health crisis helpline, said the ordeal the crew had been through would take time to overcome.
“It was worse than a prison sentence, where at least someone can deal with a set amount of time incarcerated," she said.
“They were living in perpetual mystery as to how their futures would pan out, and what that would be.
“Because of coronavirus, the world is very different now to the one they left, that will also have an impact.
“It will not fully register until they are on dry land. Some have not seen their young children grow up while others will have to rebuild relationships.
“It will be a challenge mentally, and to find other work to support their families as they have been out of circulation for so long. Hopefully they will get the care they need when they get home.”

Can NRIs vote in the election?
Indians residing overseas cannot cast their ballot abroad
Non-resident Indians or NRIs can vote only by going to a polling booth in their home constituency
There are about 3.1 million NRIs living overseas
Indians have urged political parties to extend the right to vote to citizens residing overseas
A committee of the Election Commission of India approved of proxy voting for non-resident Indians
Proxy voting means that a person can authorise someone residing in the same polling booth area to cast a vote on his behalf.
This option is currently available for the armed forces, police and government officials posted outside India
A bill was passed in the lower house of India’s parliament or the Lok Sabha to extend proxy voting to non-resident Indians
However, this did not come before the upper house or Rajya Sabha and has lapsed
The issue of NRI voting draws a huge amount of interest in India and overseas

Pharaoh's curse
British aristocrat Lord Carnarvon, who funded the expedition to find the Tutankhamun tomb, died in a Cairo hotel four months after the crypt was opened.
He had been in poor health for many years after a car crash, and a mosquito bite made worse by a shaving cut led to blood poisoning and pneumonia.
Reports at the time said Lord Carnarvon suffered from “pain as the inflammation affected the nasal passages and eyes”.
Decades later, scientists contended he had died of aspergillosis after inhaling spores of the fungus aspergillus in the tomb, which can lie dormant for months. The fact several others who entered were also found dead withiin a short time led to the myth of the curse.
