Ángel di María fue uno de los muchos jugadores de la selección argentina que brilló en la semifinal de la Copa América disputada el pasado martes, marcando dos tantos en seis minutos que contribuyeron a sentenciar la derrota de Paraguay con un 6-1.
El resultado me dejó totalmente atónito. La selección paraguaya es especialmente difícil de derribar. Naturalmente Argentina ya conocía las cualidades combativas de Paraguay después de que remontara el 2-0 adverso y lograra el empate 2-2 en su primer partido de la fase de grupos del torneo.
Debido a la diferencia horaria es posible que muchos en Europa y Asia no hayan podido ver el torneo en televisión pero yo sí y he podido comprobar lo bien que juega la selección de Argentina. Los que no pueden verlo se están perdiendo un fútbol extraordinario que reúne a los mejores jugadores del mundo, la mayoría de los cuales juegan para clubs europeos.
Estoy impaciente por ver la final del sábado entre dos equipos de mentalidad ofensiva: Argentina y la impresionante selección anfitriona, Chile.

Di María parece sentirse contento y especialmente cómodo jugando para su país, a diferencia de lo que le ocurre cuando juega para el Manchester United en la Premier League. Siempre pensé que era un fichaje estrella para el United ya que el argentino es uno de los mejores jugadores del mundo y también me ha sorprendido un poco. Louis van Gaal no ha sido nunca gran admirador de los jugadores sudamericanos, como os diría mi buen amigo Juan Román Riquelme después de su experiencia en el Barça bajo el mando del técnico holandés. Van Gaal también tenía la costumbre de dejar marchar a los jugadores sudamericanos cuando estuvo en el Bayern Munich; sin embargo, el United invirtió una enorme suma de dinero el pasado verano con los fichajes de Di María y Radamel Falcao, el delantero colombiano.
Di María empezó en Inglaterra como el jugador que sabíamos que era en el Real Madrid en la temporada 2013/14. Parecía de una clase superior a la de sus adversarios, corría con el balón contra la defensa, era un peligro cerca del área y cubría mucho campo. Jugadores con menos talento pensaban que eran demasiado buenos para trabajar tanto como él.
Pero luego todo empezó a ir mal. Perdió su sitio en el equipo y se mostraba descontento. Lo mismo le ocurrió a Falcao, que acabó por marcharse del club inglés al final de su contrato de cesión el verano pasado.
Los jugadores no son máquinas y si algo no va bien es tarea del entrenador averiguar cuál es el problema. Di María bien vale el esfuerzo. Aporta algo diferente de lo que puede dar casi cualquier otro jugador.
El Real Madrid echó de menos sus carreras de penetración la temporada pasada. Es rápido, hace asistencias y además sabe hacer lo más difícil en el fútbol: ganar el uno contra uno.
El United se arrepentirá si se marcha. Debería quedarse otra temporada para poder probarse a sí mismo y el United debería tratar de entenderle y confiar más en él. Los grandes entrenadores y los grandes futbolistas no siempre se llevan bien y no todos los futbolistas se adaptan a sistemas rígidos, pero con Di María merece la pena insistir.
El chileno Eduardo Vargas es otro jugador destacado cuando juega para su país, aunque la afición de sus anteriores clubes Queens Park Rangers, Valencia o Napoli podría tener otra opinión. Sin embargo, siempre juega bien para Chile y ha marcado 22 veces en 47 partidos, incluidos los dos goles contra Perú –otro gran partido– para llegar a la final de la Copa América.
Los delanteros de la selección chilena, en especial Arturo Vidal y Alexis Sánchez, han realizado un excelente trabajo en este torneo. Al igual que Argentina, se puede decir que Chile cuenta con su mejor generación de jugadores. También me gusta el centrocampista Jorge Valdivia que se irá al Al Wahda una vez finalizado el torneo. Valdivia es un clásico nº 10 sudamericano, con gran temporización que juega detrás de Sánchez y Vargas. También me gusta su centrocampista Charles Aranguiz que juega con mi antiguo club Internacional en Brasil.
Chile ha tenido suerte –al menos contra Uruguay con la desacertada expulsión de Edinson Cavani– de jugar contra 10 hombres en sus dos últimos partidos aunque el anfitrión se merece estar en la final.
Me han impresionado pero la final es el partido más importante de su historia. No han ganado nunca la Copa América y juegan contra Argentina en casa, en Santiago, la capital. Podrían haber agotado las entradas para el partido varias veces pero también tienen que dejar sitio a los hinchas de la selección argentina, la mejor afición de futbol. He jugado por todo el mundo y puedo decir que no hay una afición más ruidosa y apasionada como la argentina. Para ellos es una forma de vida. Escuchas una canción en las gradas de un estadio en Argentina y seis meses más tarde la escuchas en Europa o Asia.
La afición de mi antiguo club, el Atlético Madrid, era increíble en parte gracias a los argentinos residentes en Madrid que se unieron a sus filas y les mostraron como apoyar a un equipo con intensidad. Se les oirá cuando crucen los Andes para el partido del sábado y su equipo también será el favorito. Y con razón.
La victoria contra Paraguay les dará una gran confianza para la final y ya es hora de que una gran generación de jugadores gane algo. Lionel Messi lo ha ganado todo para el Barcelona y a nivel personal pero nada para Argentina. Estará ansioso por conseguir el éxito internacional y ahora es el momento para Argentina, que cuenta con mejores jugadores y ha mejorado a lo largo del torneo. Di María, Javier Pastore, Sergio Agüero, Gonzalo Higuaín y Messi pueden cambiar un partido en cuestión de segundos. Al equipo le sobra calidad y los jugadores parecen estar en su mejor momento cuando juegan juntos para su país.
Para Messi, la victoria pondría la guinda a una temporada extraordinaria aunque lo mismo podría decirse del hombre al que debe derrotar, el guardameta chileno del Barça Claudio Bravo, el jugador que más veces ha sido internacional para su selección.
Es una pena que la mayoría de la gente en el resto del mundo no estará despierta para verlo.

Ten tax points to be aware of in 2026
1. Domestic VAT refund amendments: request your refund within five years
If a business does not apply for the refund on time, they lose their credit.
2. E-invoicing in the UAE
Businesses should continue preparing for the implementation of e-invoicing in the UAE, with 2026 a preparation and transition period ahead of phased mandatory adoption.
3. More tax audits
Tax authorities are increasingly using data already available across multiple filings to identify audit risks.
4. More beneficial VAT and excise tax penalty regime
Tax disputes are expected to become more frequent and more structured, with clearer administrative objection and appeal processes. The UAE has adopted a new penalty regime for VAT and excise disputes, which now mirrors the penalty regime for corporate tax.
5. Greater emphasis on statutory audit
There is a greater need for the accuracy of financial statements. The International Financial Reporting Standards standards need to be strictly adhered to and, as a result, the quality of the audits will need to increase.
6. Further transfer pricing enforcement
Transfer pricing enforcement, which refers to the practice of establishing prices for internal transactions between related entities, is expected to broaden in scope. The UAE will shortly open the possibility to negotiate advance pricing agreements, or essentially rulings for transfer pricing purposes.
7. Limited time periods for audits
Recent amendments also introduce a default five-year limitation period for tax audits and assessments, subject to specific statutory exceptions. While the standard audit and assessment period is five years, this may be extended to up to 15 years in cases involving fraud or tax evasion.
8. Pillar 2 implementation
Many multinational groups will begin to feel the practical effect of the Domestic Minimum Top-Up Tax (DMTT), the UAE's implementation of the OECD’s global minimum tax under Pillar 2. While the rules apply for financial years starting on or after January 1, 2025, it is 2026 that marks the transition to an operational phase.
9. Reduced compliance obligations for imported goods and services
Businesses that apply the reverse-charge mechanism for VAT purposes in the UAE may benefit from reduced compliance obligations.
10. Substance and CbC reporting focus
Tax authorities are expected to continue strengthening the enforcement of economic substance and Country-by-Country (CbC) reporting frameworks. What are NFTs?
Are non-fungible tokens a currency, asset, or a licensing instrument? Arnab Das, global market strategist EMEA at Invesco, says they are mix of all of three.
You can buy, hold and use NFTs just like US dollars and Bitcoins. “They can appreciate in value and even produce cash flows.”
However, while money is fungible, NFTs are not. “One Bitcoin, dollar, euro or dirham is largely indistinguishable from the next. Nothing ties a dollar bill to a particular owner, for example. Nor does it tie you to to any goods, services or assets you bought with that currency. In contrast, NFTs confer specific ownership,” Mr Das says.
This makes NFTs closer to a piece of intellectual property such as a work of art or licence, as you can claim royalties or profit by exchanging it at a higher value later, Mr Das says. “They could provide a sustainable income stream.”
This income will depend on future demand and use, which makes NFTs difficult to value. “However, there is a credible use case for many forms of intellectual property, notably art, songs, videos,” Mr Das says.
