Espero que el 2015 haya sido un año tan bueno para ustedes como lo ha sido para mí. Sigo sintiéndome afortunado de jugar profesionalmente para un buen equipo a los 35 años. Empecé el año en Japón donde lo pasé muy bien en Osaka. Luego anuncié mi retirada del fútbol internacional antes de fichar para el Peñarol, el equipo de mi familia.
Estoy de nuevo en casa pero todavía miro mucho fútbol y hablo con mucha gente. Estos son para mí los momentos más memorables de 2015.
Gol del año
Robert Lewandowski marcó cinco goles en nueve minutos; una hazaña increíble y creo que probablemente irrepetible. Cinco goles en un partido de liga pasan una vez cada diez años; él los marcó en nueve minutos. Es un excelente jugador para el Bayern Múnich y para Polonia, y fue el máximo goleador de la fase clasificatoria para la Eurocopa 2016. La genialidad del quinto de estos goles, una volea, me provocó una carcajada. Fue contra un equipo fuerte en Wolfsburg, un equipo que había acabado segundo la temporada anterior. Ni siquiera había empezado el partido de titular pero entró en la segunda parte y entonces ¡pam, pam,pam, pam y pam!
En lo que va de temporada ha marcado 26 goles en 26 apariciones para el Bayern. Esto le sitúa entre los mejores.

Equipo del año
El Barcelona, ¡cómo no! El equipo ganó cinco trofeos; desplegó su mejor juego en los partidos más importantes y continuó jugando así en las finales. Llega a los meses de marzo, abril y mayo en su mejor forma, justo cuando se disputan estos grandes partidos dos veces a la semana.
Equipo sudamericano del año[ER1]
El River Plate. Bajo las órdenes de un joven entrenador con talento, Marcelo Gallardo, exjugador del River Plate, el equipo ganó la Copa Sudamericana y luego la Copa Libertadores. Jugó contra el Barça en la final de la Copa Mundial de Clubes pero los mejores equipos sudamericanos no pueden competir con los mejores equipos europeos. Se encuentran a años luz económicamente.
Jugador del año.
Lionel Messi. Es el mejor jugador del mejor equipo del mundo. Sigue siendo un jugador capaz de cambiar el rumbo de un partido, uno que hace magia como nadie. Ha marcado numerosos goles increíbles –mi preferido fue cuando chutó el balón por encima de Manuel Neuer en la semifinal de la Champions League. Debería ganar el Balón de oro otra vez.
Merece la pena destacar también: Neymar y Luis Suárez.
Jugador sudamericano del año
Carlos Sánchez, el uruguayo que juega con el número 8. Marca goles y es bueno a balón parado. Tiene 31 años y no hizo su debut internacional hasta los 29 años, pero desde entonces se ha convertido en un jugador importante.
Fue vital para el River Plate para ganar la Copa Libertadores la pasada temporada. Marcó en la final contra Tigres de México. Ahora se ha ido a jugar a la liga mexicana.
Mejor entrenador
Luis Enrique. Por supuesto. Lo que me gusta de él es que controla un vestuario con algunos de los jugadores más brillantes del mundo. En los clubs más grandes el entrenador tiene que ser muy fuerte, pero en la primera temporada se ganó el respeto de estos jugadores y mejoró su juego.
Pep Guardiola sigue siendo un entrenador increíble pero fue destronado cuando su equipo se enfrentó al de su excompañero de equipo Luis [ER2] Enrique.
Mejor equipo internacional
No sé mucho sobre Gales pero me impresionó bastante cuando le vi jugar, especialmente contra Bélgica, que ahora ocupa el primer puesto en el ranking mundial. Gales es como Uruguay, un país con tres millones de habitantes. Está acostumbrado a ser David en su enfrentamiento contra Goliat. Hace mucho tiempo que nosotros dominamos el arte de ser David; me alegra que Gales también lo haya aprendido.
La mayor decepción
Holanda. Tantos jugadores buenos, tanta historia de buen fútbol y buenos resultados en competiciones. Nos eliminaron del Mundial 2010 y acabaron terceros en el Mundial 2014. Deberían estar entre los que luchan para ganar trofeos y, en cambio, ni siquiera se han clasificado para la Eurocopa 2016.
Mejor afición
El fútbol uruguayo no tiene el mismo perfil que las grandes ligas europeas pero cuando volví a Uruguay me presentaron ante la afición del Peñarol durante un partido amistoso. Guau. Había al menos 30.000 aficionados para darme la bienvenida; me sentí muy querido y apoyado. Ganamos la Apertura y jugaremos la Copa Libertadores en febrero, cuando estrenemos un nuevo estadio. Son buenos tiempos para estar en el club.
Jugador sudamericano joven
Mauro Alambarri es un mediocampista de 20 años que juega para el Defensor Sporting de Montevideo. Marca goles, sabe cómo moverse con el balón y abarca todo el campo. Destacó en la selección uruguaya sub20. No le pierdan de vista.
Jugador sudamericano en Europa
Matias Kranevitter, un mediocampista de 22 años que jugó para el River Plate cedido por el Atlético de Madrid. Acaba de volver a Madrid y, aunque tardará un tiempo en adaptarse, espero grandes cosas de él en España.
El partido más fascinante
Me fascinó el encuentro de semifinales de la Champions League entre la Juventus y el Real Madrid en el Bernabéu. El Madrid contaba con esos grandes jugadores pero la Juventus, con gran experiencia en la defensa, defendió magistralmente y frustró a los jugadores blancos. No obstante, debía cambiar su táctica a medio partido tras quedar por detrás en el marcador o caería eliminado por gol fuera de casa. Al Madrid le esperaba la final contra el Barça por primera vez en la historia de la Copa de Europa.
La Juve consiguió su gol… anotado por uno de sus exjugadores Álvaro Morata, que renunció a celebrarlo. ¡El drama del fútbol!
Entonces el Madrid lanzó toda su ofensiva. Necesitaba desesperadamente a un jugador detrás de sus grandes delanteros para abrir la defensa de la Juventus. El año anterior contaba con este jugador cuando ganó la Champions y era Ángel Di Maria. Pero luego lo vendieron.
El Madrid quedó eliminado, el Barça ganó la copa y el Madrid despidió a su entrenador, antiguo jugador de la Juventus.

Pox that threatens the Middle East's native species
Camelpox
Caused by a virus related to the one that causes human smallpox, camelpox typically causes fever, swelling of lymph nodes and skin lesions in camels aged over three, but the animal usually recovers after a month or so. Younger animals may develop a more acute form that causes internal lesions and diarrhoea, and is often fatal, especially when secondary infections result. It is found across the Middle East as well as in parts of Asia, Africa, Russia and India.
Falconpox
Falconpox can cause a variety of types of lesions, which can affect, for example, the eyelids, feet and the areas above and below the beak. It is a problem among captive falcons and is one of many types of avian pox or avipox diseases that together affect dozens of bird species across the world. Among the other forms are pigeonpox, turkeypox, starlingpox and canarypox. Avipox viruses are spread by mosquitoes and direct bird-to-bird contact.
Houbarapox
Houbarapox is, like falconpox, one of the many forms of avipox diseases. It exists in various forms, with a type that causes skin lesions being least likely to result in death. Other forms cause more severe lesions, including internal lesions, and are more likely to kill the bird, often because secondary infections develop. This summer the CVRL reported an outbreak of pox in houbaras after rains in spring led to an increase in mosquito numbers.

Mercer, the investment consulting arm of US services company Marsh & McLennan, expects its wealth division to at least double its assets under management (AUM) in the Middle East as wealth in the region continues to grow despite economic headwinds, a company official said.
Mercer Wealth, which globally has $160 billion in AUM, plans to boost its AUM in the region to $2-$3bn in the next 2-3 years from the present $1bn, said Yasir AbuShaban, a Dubai-based principal with Mercer Wealth.
“Within the next two to three years, we are looking at reaching $2 to $3 billion as a conservative estimate and we do see an opportunity to do so,” said Mr AbuShaban.
Mercer does not directly make investments, but allocates clients’ money they have discretion to, to professional asset managers. They also provide advice to clients.
“We have buying power. We can negotiate on their (client’s) behalf with asset managers to provide them lower fees than they otherwise would have to get on their own,” he added.
Mercer Wealth’s clients include sovereign wealth funds, family offices, and insurance companies among others.
From its office in Dubai, Mercer also looks after Africa, India and Turkey, where they also see opportunity for growth.
Wealth creation in Middle East and Africa (MEA) grew 8.5 per cent to $8.1 trillion last year from $7.5tn in 2015, higher than last year’s global average of 6 per cent and the second-highest growth in a region after Asia-Pacific which grew 9.9 per cent, according to consultancy Boston Consulting Group (BCG). In the region, where wealth grew just 1.9 per cent in 2015 compared with 2014, a pickup in oil prices has helped in wealth generation.
BCG is forecasting MEA wealth will rise to $12tn by 2021, growing at an annual average of 8 per cent.
Drivers of wealth generation in the region will be split evenly between new wealth creation and growth of performance of existing assets, according to BCG.
Another general trend in the region is clients’ looking for a comprehensive approach to investing, according to Mr AbuShaban.
“Institutional investors or some of the families are seeing a slowdown in the available capital they have to invest and in that sense they are looking at optimizing the way they manage their portfolios and making sure they are not investing haphazardly and different parts of their investment are working together,” said Mr AbuShaban.
Some clients also have a higher appetite for risk, given the low interest-rate environment that does not provide enough yield for some institutional investors. These clients are keen to invest in illiquid assets, such as private equity and infrastructure.
“What we have seen is a desire for higher returns in what has been a low-return environment specifically in various fixed income or bonds,” he said.
“In this environment, we have seen a de facto increase in the risk that clients are taking in things like illiquid investments, private equity investments, infrastructure and private debt, those kind of investments were higher illiquidity results in incrementally higher returns.”
The Abu Dhabi Investment Authority, one of the largest sovereign wealth funds, said in its 2016 report that has gradually increased its exposure in direct private equity and private credit transactions, mainly in Asian markets and especially in China and India. The authority’s private equity department focused on structured equities owing to “their defensive characteristics.”

Ten tax points to be aware of in 2026
1. Domestic VAT refund amendments: request your refund within five years
If a business does not apply for the refund on time, they lose their credit.
2. E-invoicing in the UAE
Businesses should continue preparing for the implementation of e-invoicing in the UAE, with 2026 a preparation and transition period ahead of phased mandatory adoption.
3. More tax audits
Tax authorities are increasingly using data already available across multiple filings to identify audit risks.
4. More beneficial VAT and excise tax penalty regime
Tax disputes are expected to become more frequent and more structured, with clearer administrative objection and appeal processes. The UAE has adopted a new penalty regime for VAT and excise disputes, which now mirrors the penalty regime for corporate tax.
5. Greater emphasis on statutory audit
There is a greater need for the accuracy of financial statements. The International Financial Reporting Standards standards need to be strictly adhered to and, as a result, the quality of the audits will need to increase.
6. Further transfer pricing enforcement
Transfer pricing enforcement, which refers to the practice of establishing prices for internal transactions between related entities, is expected to broaden in scope. The UAE will shortly open the possibility to negotiate advance pricing agreements, or essentially rulings for transfer pricing purposes.
7. Limited time periods for audits
Recent amendments also introduce a default five-year limitation period for tax audits and assessments, subject to specific statutory exceptions. While the standard audit and assessment period is five years, this may be extended to up to 15 years in cases involving fraud or tax evasion.
8. Pillar 2 implementation
Many multinational groups will begin to feel the practical effect of the Domestic Minimum Top-Up Tax (DMTT), the UAE's implementation of the OECD’s global minimum tax under Pillar 2. While the rules apply for financial years starting on or after January 1, 2025, it is 2026 that marks the transition to an operational phase.
9. Reduced compliance obligations for imported goods and services
Businesses that apply the reverse-charge mechanism for VAT purposes in the UAE may benefit from reduced compliance obligations.
10. Substance and CbC reporting focus
Tax authorities are expected to continue strengthening the enforcement of economic substance and Country-by-Country (CbC) reporting frameworks. In the UAE, these regimes are increasingly being used as risk-assessment tools, providing tax authorities with a comprehensive view of multinational groups’ global footprints and enabling them to assess whether profits are aligned with real economic activity.
