AJMAN // Twenty-three people have been arrested for begging for money in different areas of Ajman, police said.
Col Abdulla Al Matroushi, director of Ajman’s criminal investigation department, said that since the beginning of Ramadan, 16 men and seven women from different Arab and Asian countries were arrested for the practice outside mosques, shops and malls.
Police said some of the beggars have been deported while others await a decision on whether they will be expelled from the country.
Ajman Police launched to coincide with the holy month a campaign named We are all against begging.
“Begging disturbs the public and the days of the holy month. The efforts of the investigation department has led to a decrease in the number of beggars compared to previous years,” said Col Al Matroushi.
He wants the public to not interact with the beggars and to report them by calling either 067401616 or 067409999.
