Agra // Prince William and his wife Kate visited the Taj Mahal yesterday, creating an image with poignant echoes for Britain’s royal family.
William’s mother, Diana, Princess of Wales, was photographed alone outside the “monument to love” in February 1992, amid swirling speculation about the state of her marriage to Prince Charles.
The couple separated in December that year, and were formally divorced in August 1996. A year later the princess died in a car crash in Paris.
The Taj Mahal was cleared of tourists yesterday before the couple arrived, after flying in to Agra, its streets decked out in fairy lights and flowers.
Kensington Palace said Prince William felt “incredibly lucky” to visit a site where his mother’s memory was so alive.
The visit wrapped up a week-long trip to India and Bhutan in which the couple fed baby rhinos in north-east Assam and trekked to a monastery in Bhutan – retracing the footsteps of Prince Charles.
