US billboard written in Arabic mocks Trump’s xenophobic rhetoric

DEARBORN, US // A billboard written in Arabic has appeared in the US state of Michigan, making fun of Donald Trump’s attitude towards Muslisms, Arabs and immigrants.

The sign, which reads “Donald Trump can’t read this, but he is afraid of it”, was paid for by the Nuisance Committee, a super PAC (political action committee) set up by the creators of the party game Cards Against Humanity.

The billboard is located along a motorway close to the town of Dearborn in the Detroit metropolitan area.

Melissa Harris, a spokeswoman for the Nuisance Committee, said the super PAC had chosen this spot because Dearborn has a high percentage of Arab American residents and is located in a swing state.

Roughly one third of Dearborn’s nearly 100,000 population claim some Arab heritage, according to the Arab American Institute, a DC-based non-profit.

“We intentionally did not put the translation on the board,” Ms Harris told WWJ Newsradio 950, “because I like the idea of people who do not speak Arabic [having] to ask their friends who do speak Arabic for them to translate the board for them.”

“And I personally hope this also will generate some dialogue between Arabic speaking people and non-Arabic speaking people in Detroit and across the country.”

Mr Trump is infamous for his anti-Muslim and anti-immigrant rhetoric. Last December he called for a complete ban on all Americans entering the United States and more recently has called for an immediate suspension of immigration from “any nation that has been compromised by terrorism”.
