Washington // US president-elect Donald Trump on Friday named Kathleen Troia (known as KT) McFarland as his deputy national security adviser.

Ms McFarland, 65, has previously worked for three other Republican presidents – Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford and Ronald Reagan – and was an adviser to former secretary of state Henry Kissinger from 1970 to 1976. In 2006, she also ran unsuccessfully for the senate seat then held by Hillary Clinton.

Like her soon-to-be boss, Lt Gen Michael Flynn, Mr Trump’s choice for national security adviser, Ms McFarland has been highly critical of president Barack Obama’s approach to combating terrorism, saying he has not acknowledged the threat posed by extremists.

She is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and is currently a national security analyst and online opinion columnist for Fox News.

Another appointment announced on Friday was that of Don McGhan, a well-known campaign finance lawyer, as White House counsel.
