UNGA 2020: Houthis must cease Yemen hostilities, says US

Iran-backed Houthi forces in Yemen must stop hostilities to allow stability in the country, the US State Department said.

After meetings between US State Department officials and members of the UN Security Council last week, the US repeated its calls for an end to Houthi aggression.

US deputy secretary of state Steve Biegun, and undersecretary of state for political affairs David Hale, last Thursday met Security Council members Kuwait, Sweden and Germany to discuss Yemen's civil war and the humanitarian conditions.

“The United States remains deeply concerned by the Houthis' aggression, supported by Iranian weapons shipments in violation of UN arms embargoes,” the State Department said.

“We call on the Houthis to immediately cease their cross-border attacks against Saudi Arabia and halt their attacks on the city of Marib, where nearly a million Yemenis have sought refuge since the beginning of the war."

Mr Biegun also called on donor governments to contribute funds if they have not done so this year.

The Houthis have blocked humanitarian relief efforts and closed Sanaa airport to UN and aid flights, in moves decried by the US and international community.

The State Department also criticised the Iran-backed rebels' treatment of journalists, opposition activists and Yemeni Jews.

The Houthis have also denied UN access to a rusting, neglected tanker carrying more than 1,000 barrels of oil, which has provoked fears of an explosion or environmental disaster.

"We call on the Houthis to cease their environmental brinkmanship and allow UN access to the Safer  tanker before there is an oil spill or explosion that would bring further environmental and humanitarian calamity to Yemen, the Red Sea, and the region," the statement said.

Attacks on Saudi Arabia by the Houthis have continued in recent days.

Five civilians were injured when a missile launched by the Houthis hit a village in Saudi Arabia's southern Jazan region, state media reported on Saturday.
