Former US president Barack Obama's tweet in response to the violence in Charlottesville last week has taken the crown as Twitter's most-liked post ever.

"No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin or his background or his religion...," Mr Obama tweeted, quoting the late Nelson Mandela. He posted the tweet alongside a photo of himself smiling at a group of children of different races.

Twitter spokesman Nick Pacilo said Mr Obama's tweet set the mark shortly after 10pm Eastern time in the United States on Tuesday night by passing Ariana Grande's tweet that followed a deadly bombing at her concert in Manchester in May.

Mr Obama's post currently has more than 3.1 million likes.
