SANAA // Yemen's new prime minister said he was set to announce the country's unity government yesterday, with the new cabinet split between government loyalists and the opposition.
The government has been formed," Mohammed Basindawa told AFP. "We have agreed on all the names."
The new cabinet comes after the power transition deal signed by outgoing president Ali Abdullah Saleh last month.
Horriah Mashoor, an opposition leader, and Jawharah Hamud, a socialist leader from Aden, will be the two female ministers in the cabinet.
Yemen's opposition Common Forum spokesman Mohammed Qahtan said last week that Saleh loyalists would keep the ministries of defence, foreign affairs, oil, telecommunications and civil services.
He said that the opposition would head the ministries of interior, finance, cooperation, information and human rights.
The formation of the government was taking place as intermittent shelling and fighting continued between Saleh forces and tribesmen in Sanaa.
The renewed violence that erupted Tuesday evening killed at least one person and wounded 12 others, said medics and tribal leaders.
The Yemeni regime and opposition spokesmen accused each other's forces yesterday of shelling government and residential areas in the capital.
