Two British women killed and one man injured in Oman tourist spot

Two British women have been killed after being hit by a car in a popular tourist spot in Oman.

Another man was injured in the accident, which happened in Salalah in the far south of the country near Haffa market on Thursday.

The man, who is also a British national, suffered moderate injuries and is understood to be in a stable condition at a local hospital.

Preliminary reports suggest the incident was caused by the driver’s deviation from his lane, according to Royal Oman Police.

On Friday, officers issued a statement on Twitter saying that the driver of the car did not have a driving license and an investigation into the crash had begun.

A statement from the Ministry of Tourism said: "It is with deep regret that the Ministry of Tourism has learned of the accident that took place near the Haffa market in Salalah, which affected three British citizens and resulted into the death of two ladies, while a gentleman was injured and is in stable condition.

"The ministry would like to express its deepest condolences to the families of the two victims of this tragic and painful accident, and it wishes the injured a speedy recovery and a safe return to his home country.”

It added that it was liaising with the relevant authorities in order to provide assistance where needed.

Reports in Oman press said the victims were tourists from a cruise ship which berthed in Salalah on Thursday.

They had only been in the city for a couple of hours and were supposed to go on to Muscat, where they were scheduled to stay for two days.

It is unclear whether the tourists were on foot or in another vehicle at the time of the accident.

What is graphene?

Graphene is extracted from graphite and is made up of pure carbon.

It is 200 times more resistant than steel and five times lighter than aluminum.

It conducts electricity better than any other material at room temperature.

It is thought that graphene could boost the useful life of batteries by 10 per cent.

Graphene can also detect cancer cells in the early stages of the disease.

The material was first discovered when Andre Geim and Konstantin Novoselov were 'playing' with graphite at the University of Manchester in 2004.
