Three aid ships are bound for the Yemeni island of Socotra to provide immediate provisions for the ramadan requirements of the population on the island as the Emirates Red Crescent (ERC) helps the needy throughout the country.

Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ruler's Representative in Al Dhafra Region, and Chairman of the ERC directed that the ships are loaded with 538 tonnes of basic food items for the Ramadan programme, which includes Iftar Project, Ramadan Ration, and Eid clothing.

The first ship has arrived at Socotra Port and within the coming days, two more ships will leave as a continuation of the fraternal support provided to the islands by the UAE.

The ERC has also despatched teams to Hadramout to distribute Iftar and Suhoor meals in a project that is now in its third year.

Ahmed Al Neyadi, head of the ERC Team in Hadramaut, said the organisation is working to ease the suffering caused by food shortages and relieve the current living conditions of Yemenis.

There were also deliveries in Al Haymah in Tuhayta District, south of Hodeidah governorate, which included food baskets. This comes following its liberation from the Iranian-backed Houthi militias.

The convey distributed food baskets to answer the needs of 700 poor Yemeni families, who were displaced from areas around Al Haymah, during a time when most families are suffering from economic issues caused by the militias and Yemen’s dire humanitarian conditions.

Rashid Al Khateri, Head of the ERC Team in the Red Sea Coast of Yemen, said that distributing the food baskets and humanitarian aid to the residents of Al Haymah is part of the UAE’s support for the Yemeni people.

"The ERC is conducting ongoing relief campaigns to improve the living conditions of Yemenis, by distributing humanitarian and relief assistance and implementing developmental projects, to help them overcome their difficult conditions caused by the Houthi siege," he added.

Sheikh Hamdan said the UAE will always be in support of the people of Yemen in all conditions and circumstances and will continue its humanitarian support in Yemen based on its pioneering role in the humanitarian, relief and development work in Yemen to mirror the strong bonds between the two fraternal peoples.

Dr. Mohammed Ateeq Al Falahi, Secretary General of the ERC asserted that the philanthropic body has started implementing the instructions of Sheikh Hamdan and ensured Ramadan needs of the populations of Socotra from its strategic stock of relief items at its warehouse in the International Humanitarian City in Dubai.

He added that ERC will supervise delivery of items to the population of the Socotra island through the holy month.
