GAZA CITY // Israeli airstrikes hit a series of targets in the Gaza Strip on Monday night, Palestinian security sources and eyewitnesses said.
Hamas bases were struck near the southern city of Rafah and Gaza City, along with open land south-east of Gaza City.
The Palestinian health ministry said there were no immediate reports of injuries, but at least one man was seen bleeding and being taken for treatment from a house near one of the bases.
The Israeli army said the strikes were in response to a rocket from Gaza that landed in Israel.
The rocket, which was fired a few hours before the strikes, landed in an open area close to Israeli border communities without causing any injuries.
It was claimed by a previously unheard of Salafist group.
Missiles and rockets are periodically fired at Israel, generally by hardline Islamist groups opposed to Hamas.
But Israel holds Hamas responsible for all rocket fire from Gaza regardless of who carried it out.
