A German teenager has been pictured emerging from rubble in Mosul following the capture of the Iraqi city from ISIL last week.
Sixteen-year-old Linda Wenzel, who disappeared from her home in Pulsnitz, near Dresden, more than a year ago, is believed to have converted to Islam and travelled to Iraq to join up with the terror group.
Iraqi security forces have said that Wenzel had been working as a sniper for ISIL in the city, which had been pounded by heavy artillery for months in the run-up to its recapture.
It’s believed that more than 5,000 buildings in the Old City have been damaged or destroyed in the battle to retake Mosul; on Tuesday the bodies of five children were recovered from rubble by Iraqi relief workers there.
NGOs in the city believe there could be thousands lying dead or injured under ruined buildings bombed by Coalition airplanes or ISIL rocket fire.
Wenzel was captured in a tunnel system underneath Mosul by armed forces mopping up after the battle for the city. She was with around 30 other women from Russia, Turkey, Canada and Chechnya, some of whom wore suicide vests and were carrying automatic weapons.
A Western journalist, Björn Stritzel, who has been following the girl’s story for months, has been tweeting that he believes it is definitely the German.
Stritzel said that the girl had been trafficked between rival jihadist groups since she arrived in the Middle East and had probably been smuggled into Mosul.
“It’s almost unbelievable how lucky she was: Apparently found uninjured under the rubble after months of fierce fighting in Mosul,” Stritzel tweeted.
Initially it was believed that she could have been a Yazidi girl who had been enslaved by ISIL, as a family was looking for a daughter of a similar description, but a relative came to try to identify her and said she wasn’t that person.
Wenzel had shown an interest in Islam at the beginning of last year, and her mother bought her a copy of the Koran. Soon the girl was fasting for Ramadan and covering up in heavy clothing.
She is believed to have bought airplane tickets to fly to Istanbul in summer last year, and on July 1 left her family home saying she was going to see a friend. She was not seen again in Germany.

Ten tax points to be aware of in 2026
1. Domestic VAT refund amendments: request your refund within five years
If a business does not apply for the refund on time, they lose their credit.
2. E-invoicing in the UAE
Businesses should continue preparing for the implementation of e-invoicing in the UAE, with 2026 a preparation and transition period ahead of phased mandatory adoption.
3. More tax audits
Tax authorities are increasingly using data already available across multiple filings to identify audit risks.
4. More beneficial VAT and excise tax penalty regime
Tax disputes are expected to become more frequent and more structured, with clearer administrative objection and appeal processes. The UAE has adopted a new penalty regime for VAT and excise disputes, which now mirrors the penalty regime for corporate tax.
5. Greater emphasis on statutory audit
There is a greater need for the accuracy of financial statements. The International Financial Reporting Standards standards need to be strictly adhered to and, as a result, the quality of the audits will need to increase.
6. Further transfer pricing enforcement
Transfer pricing enforcement, which refers to the practice of establishing prices for internal transactions between related entities, is expected to broaden in scope. The UAE will shortly open the possibility to negotiate advance pricing agreements, or essentially rulings for transfer pricing purposes.
7. Limited time periods for audits
Recent amendments also introduce a default five-year limitation period for tax audits and assessments, subject to specific statutory exceptions. While the standard audit and assessment period is five years, this may be extended to up to 15 years in cases involving fraud or tax evasion.
8. Pillar 2 implementation
Many multinational groups will begin to feel the practical effect of the Domestic Minimum Top-Up Tax (DMTT), the UAE's implementation of the OECD’s global minimum tax under Pillar 2. While the rules apply for financial years starting on or after January 1, 2025, it is 2026 that marks the transition to an operational phase.
9. Reduced compliance obligations for imported goods and services
Businesses that apply the reverse-charge mechanism for VAT purposes in the UAE may benefit from reduced compliance obligations.
10. Substance and CbC reporting focus
Tax authorities are expected to continue strengthening the enforcement of economic substance and Country-by-Country (CbC) reporting frameworks. In the UAE, these regimes are increasingly being used as risk-assessment tools, providing tax authorities with a comprehensive view of multinational groups’ global footprints and enabling them to assess whether profits are aligned with real economic activity.

Retirement funds heavily invested in equities at a risky time
Pension funds in growing economies in Asia, Latin America and the Middle East have a sharply higher percentage of assets parked in stocks, just at a time when trade tensions threaten to derail markets.
Retirement money managers in 14 geographies now allocate 40 per cent of their assets to equities, an 8 percentage-point climb over the past five years, according to a Mercer survey released last week that canvassed government, corporate and mandatory pension funds with almost $5 trillion in assets under management. That compares with about 25 per cent for pension funds in Europe.
The escalating trade spat between the US and China has heightened fears that stocks are ripe for a downturn. With tensions mounting and outcomes driven more by politics than economics, the S&P 500 Index will be on course for a “full-scale bear market” without Federal Reserve interest-rate cuts, Citigroup’s global macro strategy team said earlier this week.
The increased allocation to equities by growth-market pension funds has come at the expense of fixed-income investments, which declined 11 percentage points over the five years, according to the survey.
Hong Kong funds have the highest exposure to equities at 66 per cent, although that’s been relatively stable over the period. Japan’s equity allocation jumped 13 percentage points while South Korea’s increased 8 percentage points.
The money managers are also directing a higher portion of their funds to assets outside of their home countries. On average, foreign stocks now account for 49 per cent of respondents’ equity investments, 4 percentage points higher than five years ago, while foreign fixed-income exposure climbed 7 percentage points to 23 per cent. Funds in Japan, South Korea, Malaysia and Taiwan are among those seeking greater diversification in stocks and fixed income.
