WASHINGTON // Hillary Rodham Clinton says she’s running for president of the United States.

The former first lady and secretary of state made her 2016 plans official on her campaign website on Sunday.

She says in a video that “everyday Americans need a champion. I want to be that champion.”

Ms Clinton is aiming to be the first female president.

Ms Clinton enters the Democratic primaries in a strong position to succeed her 2008 rival, US president Barack Obama.

Following Sunday’s announcement, she’s expected to travel soon to early voting states, including Iowa and New Hampshire.
