Passenger stops bus from plunging into alpine abyss

A passenger averted tragedy after a bus driver lost consciousness at the wheel, helping stop the vehicle at the point when it was teetering over an Alpine abyss.

The driver fainted on Saturday as the bus carrying 24 French tourists was heading downhill from a pasture nearly 2,000 metres above sea level, east of the city of Innsbruck, Austrian police said

It then gathered speed, repeatedly banging into the mountainside lining the road.

The passenger dashed forward and applied the brakes.

That, and a guide rail piercing the front of the bus, brought it to a halt - but only after the front end was already jutting over a 100-metre precipice.

Police said 10 people were injured in the accident, with four needing hospital treatment.
