Brexit latest: UK government confirms parliament will be suspended at the end of the day

Parliament will be closed down until October 14th, making this the longest suspension in modern history

A Downing Street spokesperson has confirmed that parliament will be shut down at the end of Commons business today, marking the start of the longest period of suspension in modern history.

UK prime minister Boris Johnson met with Irish prime minister Leo Varadkar in Dublin this morning to discuss alternatives to the backstop, an agreement to ensure frictionless trade across the UK's only land border with the European Union in the event of a no-deal Brexit.
