ADEN // Al Qaeda’s Yemen branch has claimed responsibility for a suicide bombing that targeted the governor and police chief of Aden on Friday.
The US monitoring group Site said Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula claimed the attack in a brief statement on its Telegram channel.
Governor Aidarous Al Zabidi and police chief Brig Shallal Shaei both survived the bombing of their convoy as it passed Al Inma City on Friday morning. One soldier was wounded in the attack, Aden police ssid.
It was the fourth attempt on Mr Al Zabidi’s life since he took office in December. His predecessor was killed in a car bombing on December 6 that was claimed by ISIL, Al Qaeda’s rival extremist group in Yemen.
There were no claims of responsibility for the previous attacks on Mr Al Zabidi.
