DUBAI // Some of the brightest talents of the next generation of artists were recognised on Monday at a ceremony for the Sheikha Manal Young Artist Award.
In Dubai’s Armani Hotel, 10 winners were presented their honours by Sheikh Mansoor bin Mohammed Al Maktoum.
The annual award is for students or recent graduates for outstanding work in four categories – design, multimedia, photography and fine art.
The winners each received Dh50,000.
Sheikh Mansoor congratulated the winners and consoled the others.
“Although there are sad faces in the room, I want you to remember you are all winners,” he said.
“Thank you for participating and good luck next time.”
Taking first place in design was Haneen Hazeem for her modular furniture series Little Wooden Creatures.
Sadaf Rezaei’s image of her aged grandmother asleep on the sofa won best photography, and for multimedia, Emad Aranki’s video titled Disturbance won first prize.
Hinjal Kumar’s architectural diary, Dimensions VI, won the fine art section and Mena Al Samarrai took out the People’s Choice Award and a cash prize of Dh12,000.
