Women scientists and researchers can apply for Dh78,500 fellowship

DUBAI // Women scientists and researchers in the region can now apply to earn a Unesco-sponsored fellowship that is partnered with Zayed University.

The L’Oreal-UNESCO for Women in Science Middle East Fellowships was founded in 1998 and has recognised and honoured more than 2,250 exceptional women scientists from 115 countries and provided fellowships for promising young women researchers.

Four fellowships of 20,000 euros (Dh78,500) each will be given out this year to four women scientists holding a PhD in the field of life sciences or physical sciences or in pursuit of a master’s or other research leading to a PhD degree.

It is open to women from the UAE, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia or Yemen.

The 2015 fellowships are the result of efforts by Unesco, Zayed University and L’Oreal to empower Arab women scientists and recognise their achievements and contributions to the progress of science and scientific research, and in acknowledging the role they play in the development of their countries.

Applications for the 2015 fellowships should be submitted at www.fwis.fr until June 25.

All applications will be evaluated by a pan-Arab panel of scientists, chaired by professor Mouin Hamze, secretary general of the National Council for Scientific Research in Lebanon.

Ziina users can donate to relief efforts in Beirut

Ziina users will be able to use the app to help relief efforts in Beirut, which has been left reeling after an August blast caused an estimated $15 billion in damage and left thousands homeless. Ziina has partnered with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees to raise money for the Lebanese capital, co-founder Faisal Toukan says. “As of October 1, the UNHCR has the first certified badge on Ziina and is automatically part of user's top friends' list during this campaign. Users can now donate any amount to the Beirut relief with two clicks. The money raised will go towards rebuilding houses for the families that were impacted by the explosion.”
