ABU DHABI // A woman has been arrested for allegedly embezzling Dh11 million and spending much of the money on buying luxury cars for a potential boyfriend.
The 33-year-old, identified as H K H by police, spent the cash on at least seven vehicles - some with unique number plates - business class flights to Europe and expensive watches.
Pictures released by police showed a row of vehicles including two Rolls-Royce and a Lexus 4x4.
The suspect, who was described by police as a “Gulf national”, attempted to woo her suitor, 26, with the lavish gifts.
She even wrapped stacks of dirhams in red ribbons and gifted them as presents.
The woman worked as the head of accounts and was in charge of VIP customer service at a bank, though exactly how she took money from her employer was not detailed by police.
She even passed on money to her boyfriend’s brother so he could live in “absolute luxury”, said Colonel Tarek Al Ghoul, deputy head of Abu Dhabi Police CID.
The trio were arrested after police received a complaint from the woman’s employer when her deception came to light.
She admitted to investigators that she stole the money, police said, because she did not want to skimp on the man who promised her marriage.
The two brothers, also identified as Gulf nationals, confessed taking advantage of her to the point of conning her. All three were referred to the public prosecution department.
“Women who are dreaming of marriage should not to fall victim to imaginary promises and allow themselves to be taken advantage of,” said Colonel Al Ghoul.
