DUBAI // A woman who went into a police station crying hysterically to report an attempted rape was told by police she would face charges of drinking alcohol.
However, undeterred by the threat, she told the police officer said she would rather be deported for being drunk than not see justice done.
The Criminal Court of First Instance heard that the 26-year-old Kyrgyz visitor hailed a taxi outside the Lotus Hotel in Deira, planning to return to her sister's house in Abu Hail.
"As soon as I was in the cab he started driving in a different direction and I started feeling I was in danger," she told prosecutors. "He took me towards a beach that was deserted and I knew he was going to hurt me."
Sensing danger, the woman tore a plastic sticker from the inside of the taxi that contained the cab's number and company, and placed it in her handbag.
"He slowed down, then stopped on the beach and I screamed at him that I would call police but he did not care and jumped from the front seat on to me at the back seat," she said.
According to the prosecution, DP, a 26-year-old National Taxi driver from Bangladesh, tried to rape the woman but she fought him off for three minutes.
To escape, the woman pretended she was about to vomit at which point the taxi driver told her to get out of the car.
An officer at the Muragabat police station told prosecutors that he had been stationed at the reception area and saw the woman enter the station crying hysterically.
"She said that she was drunk and that she was coming to file a report on an attempted rape," the policeman said.
"I warned her that she would face alcohol consumption charges, but she responded by telling me that she did not care if she was deported for being drunk."
The policeman said that after she handed them the sticker, the driver was called to the station and arrested.
"When she saw him enter the station she attacked him and hit him but we managed to calm her down," he said.
The driver denies attempted rape. He will appear in court again on February 28. The woman was referred to Dubai Court of Misdemeanours on a charge of illegally consuming alcohol.
