ABU DHABI // A woman accused of having an abortion told a court yesterday she had not even been pregnant.

The woman, from Bangladesh, checked into Lifeline Hospital in Abu Dhabi on April 30 suffering from severe cramps and bleeding thought to be menstruation.

But blood tests and an ultrasound suggested she had miscarried a four-week-old foetus, heard the Criminal Court.

“She told me she had taken medicine when she was in Bangladesh last month,” the nurse said. “But I don’t know what she took. And I can’t say it made her abort the foetus.”

The woman testified that she had not been pregnant and was merely suffering a heavy menstrual cycle.

The case was adjourned.
