Drivers found to be at fault in traffic accidents will soon be fined an additional Dh500, which will be paid to private contracting company Saaed, Abu Dhabi Police has announced. The firm has been hired to handle minor, non-injury accident investigations by the police, in an emirate notorious for road accidents. There were about 95,000 minor accidents in the emirate last year. If the system had been in place, the charges would have totalled an estimated Dh47.5 million (US$13m). Abu Dhabi Police defended the move, which comes into effect on 12 Oct, saying that the Dh500 fine is less than the fees levied against motorists at fault in some other countries.
