Mist was detected over Liwa and Sweihan in the early hours of Wednesday morning with visibility reduced to 3,000 metres and 2,700 metres respectively.

The National Centre for Meteorology and Seismology warned of poor visibility due to a chance of fog formation over some coastal and internal areas in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

A spokesman at the centre said the cause of the fog was an increase in the relative humidity on Tuesday night. “The areas affected were Sweihan, Liwa and Al Dhafra,” he said. “All these areas had fog starting from 2am to 3am and it continued until about 7am to 8am.”

He said this type of weather was not frequent in summer. “If you look back at historical data, the frequency of fog is higher in winter,” he said. “During summer months, it just dissipates quickly due to high temperatures and the sun rises earlier.”

He advised drivers to take care on the roads when visibility is reduced.
