ABU DHABI // The UAE aims to increase the presence of diplomatic missions in Africa, said Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed, Foreign Minister, at the first meeting of UAE ambassadors and heads of representative missions on Tuesday.

Sheikh Abdullah said the meeting, in the Ugandan capital of Kampala, enriched diplomatic work through the exchange of views and ideas.

“Africa is witnessing rapid growth in its population and is able to accommodate various types of foreign investments,” he said.

“Our geographical proximity to Africa serves as an opportunity to benefit from their strategic links and activate them in several areas.”

Sheikh Abdullah said diplomats helped with the signing of agreements to avoid double taxation, for investment protection, air transport and cultural cooperation.

Uganda’s president, Yoweri Museveni, said his country was keen to bolster its relations with the UAE.

Discussions were held on strengthening relations in the economic, investment, trade and energy fields. Issues pertaining to the Arabian Gulf and Africa were also discussed before signing a double tax avoidance agreement.

During the forum, Reem Al Hashemy, Minister of State, reviewed the UAE’s strategic approach in Africa and emphasised the importance of UAE relations with African nations.
