UAE provides medical care to more than 4,000 women and children in Sudan

Sheikha Fatima Global Humanitarian Campaign ran the six-week medical programme in rural Sudan

More than 4,000 women and children in Sudan have received medical treatment under the Sheikha Fatima Global Humanitarian Campaign, the state news agency WAM reported.

Volunteer doctors from the UAE and Sudan provided treatment, diagnostic services and preventative care to rural areas, touring in 20 mobile clinics and field hospitals. The campaign, titled “All of Us Are Our Mother Fatima”, ended in Sudan’s River Nile State after more than six weeks.

The state suffers from understaffed medical facilities and malaria.

The campaign began on March 12. As part of the “Year of Zayed” initiative, the campaign aimed to honour the regional humanitarian work ordered by the country’s founding President, Sheikh Zayed.

It is one of the humanitarian initiatives launched by Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, the chair of the General Women's Union and president of the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood. It ran in Sudan under the patronage of Sudan's First Lady Widad Babiker and in partnership with the Zayed Giving Initiative and Sanad Charitable Organisation.

Noura Al Suwaidi, the director of the General Women’s Union, said the campaign was a model to be copied for voluntary work and is a continuation of Sheikha Fatima’s ongoing work to empower women and children in the Middle East. Last month, Sheikha Fatima donated $1 million to the Fund for Refugee Women to mark Mother’s Day and called on the international community to meet its humanitarian responsibility to woman and children fleeing violence.
