The historic Banqueting House in Whitehall was the venue for celebrations for the UAE National Day in the UK, as guests hosted by the London Embassy reflected on the year of tolerance.

"I am on a mission to sell the UAE to as many Brits as I can find," Mansoor Abulhoul, the UAE ambassador told the gathering.

"Britain is an essential friend repeatedly helping us with our social and economic development."

Mr Abulhoul spoke of highlights of the Year of Tolerance and said the British-based architect David Adjaye had been commissioned for the Abrahamic Family House, the year's legacy.

"This amazing piece of architecture is being designed here in Britain by a fantastic team," he said.

The ambassador also looked forward to the 2020 Expo as a highlight of the year ahead.

"Expo is just another example of the UAE-UK joining forces to do great things and Britain is playing a big role in making Expo happen," Mr Abulhoul said.

Afra Atiq, the spoken word artist, was among six poets from both countries featured on stage following the welcome address.

Other Emiratis in London found their own ways to celebrate the 48th anniversary of the state.

Institutions that have deep ties with the UAE joined in.
