Dubai // A Dh5.8 million centre to train nurses and paramedics has opened in Pakistan – with the help of the UAE.

The unit has the latest medical equipment and will provide highly trained nurses to other hospitals and medical centres in the country.

The centre in Saidu Sharif, a town in Swat Valley in the north-east Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, was funded by the Project to Assist Pakistan.

The inauguration of the Paramedic Institute Saidu Sharif Swat was attended by Essa Al Nuaimi, UAE Ambassador to Pakistan.

Also present were Abdullah Al Ghafli, director of the Project to Assist Pakistan, and Gen Raheel Sharif, Pakistan’s army chief of staff, the state news agency Wam reported yesterday.

Mr Al Ghafli said all health initiatives developed by the project would be able to provide quality health services to the public.

He said nurses would be provided to other hospitals and health institutes to support the health sector in coming years.

The Project to Assist Pakistan began in 2011 in an effort to help the country ease the impact of devastating floods from the previous year.

Launched under the initiative of the President, Sheikh Khalifa, it has helped to build more than seven hospitals and is involved in other areas, such as education, water and infrastructure.
