ABU DHABI // Five men who rented out a villa complex that they did not own have each been sentenced to five years in jail by the Criminal Court.
Al Ittihad, the Arabic-language sister newspaper of The National, reported that an Arab investor was conned out of about Dh350,000 by the men.
Prosecutors said the defendants drew up fake Abu Dhabi Municipality documents to convince the victim that they owned the property in Khalifa City.
The first con man, an Emirati, rented the villas after being requested to do so by another Emirati and an Egyptian.
He said that after signing the contract and receiving the sum in cash, he took only Dh1,000 and handed the rest to the other defendants.
