A "surprised and flattered" Yousef Al Otaiba has described the proud moment he was notified of a new position as minister to complement his ambassadorial role to the United States.
Mr Al Otaiba, who has held the position of UAE Ambassador in Washington for nine years, has been promoted to the rank of minister by a federal decree issued by President Sheikh Khalifa.
The title has acknowledged his work to increase bilateral ties between the two nations.
Although the title is considered a promotion in rank, Mr Al Otaiba will continue his ambassadorial position in the US capital to enhance bilateral relations.
“I’m extremely flattered, surprised, proud and enthusiastic to continue working,” he said.
“It motivates me to work even harder and shows the leadership appreciates the effort we have put into our work, and in building the relationship between the UAE and Washington.
“I will do my absolute best to live up to the expectations of my leadership and the people of the UAE after they have placed so much trust and confidence in me.”
Since 2008, he has worked closely with US government officials and business leaders to deepen economic and trade relations, whilst further enhancing security ties through intelligence and counter terrorism.
Prior to his ambassadorial role, Mr Al Otaiba was integral in developing relations with the US via his position as director of international affairs for the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed.
In this role, he served as one of the UAE’s principal security, anti-terrorism and defence liaisons to other governments. He was also heavily involved in diplomatic efforts to improve regional security and defence co-operation.
He has also overseen the UAE’s significant commitment to philanthropic activities that benefit underserved communities across America.
Since taking up his position stateside, Mr Al Otaiba has helped to develop closer social, educational and cultural ties via partnerships and exchanges with the Cleveland Clinic, New York University, Children’s National Medical Centre, Johns Hopkins and the Smithsonian, among other US institutions.
