DUBAI // Three Emirati men have been arrested after being found in possession of more than 22,000 illegal pills.

Maj Gen Khalil Al Mansouri, of Dubai Police’s Criminal Investigation Department, said the suspects were caught in a residential area in the emirate in January.

Col Eid Mohammed Thani Hareb, director of the police anti-narcotics department, said that two of the suspects had reputations for dealing and taking drugs.

“The men were found in the house of one of the suspects, 24-year-old A A Y, who is single and unemployed,” he said.

“The other two suspects were identified as 25-year-old B N A, also unemployed, and M M A M, 26, who works at a governmental institution.

“Of the 22,500 seized, 13,000 were tramadol pills, a psychotropic drug that should only be consumed if prescribed by a licensed physician.”

Col Hareb said the suspects admitted to smuggling the pills into the emirate with the intent to promote and sell them.

The three men were transferred to public prosecution accused of possession of a psychotropic drug with the intent to sell and of drug consumption.
