Upgrades to Abu Dhabi’s road-safety signs, pavements and fences

ABU DHABI // A raft of measures to improve the safety of pedestrians and road users has been implemented by the municipality.

Pavements have been widened and standardised, new fencing to prevent jaywalking erected and electronic directional signs installed.

“These initiatives are intended to place Abu Dhabi city at the forefront of a modern metropolis and implement the best practices to establish modern infrastructure and offer excellent services,” the municipality said on Wednesday.

It began installing the electronic signs near pedestrian tunnels on Hamdan Street in the capital this week. They are intended to draw the attention of pedestrians, especially visitors, to the safe crossing points in underpasses.

The initiative is being tested at a number of locations and then will be extended to all pedestrian tunnels in Abu Dhabi, the municipality said.

The electronic messages can be changed to notify road users of tunnel closures for maintenance or offer congratulatory messages to the public on festivals or official events.

"These measures are part of the municipality's ongoing endeavours to improve and upgrade the efficiency of road networks in Abu Dhabi and ensure the highest levels of safety and comfort for all road users," the municipality said.
