Tough rules for Dubai’s trainee bus drivers

Learner drivers must undergo a strict training and testing regime to improve traffic safety in Dubai.

DUBAI // Tough rules for training and regulating minibus drivers have been introduced in Dubai.

The reforms mean learner drivers will undergo a strict training and testing regime before they can take the wheel.

They must be over the age of 21 and pass a medical fitness test before starting the training.

The programme includes eight theoretical classes and a 35-question test before the practical road examination.

If the applicant fails any of the sections they will have to attend eight more training sessions.

Hussain Al Saffar, director of driver training and qualification at the Roads and Transport Authority, said the move would improve traffic safety.

“The RTA Licensing Agency is making relentless endeavours to improve the principles of traffic safety under the provisions of the Federal Driving and Traffic Law, in keeping with RTA’s vision of safe and smooth transport for all,” Mr Al Saffar said.

“It is also intended to enrich the theoretical and practical knowledge of drivers through honing their driving skills and attitudes, particularly as light-bus drivers deal with as many as 26 passengers.”

The revision of the licensing procedure is the first step in a comprehensive review process that will be completed in due course, he said.

“Cooperation is in hand with the driving centres in Dubai, which are keen on providing dedicated tracks for training on driving light buses and conducting various manoeuvres at world-class standards,” Mr Al Saffar added.
