Abu Dhabi Police have released dramatic footage demonstrating the dangers of sudden swerving on the roads.

As part of a safety drive, the force posted a video on its Twitter account showing a reckless motorist crossing three lanes at high speed without indicating in a desperate dash to reach an exit, before smashing into another vehicle.

Abu Dhabi Police said quick lane changes are one of the leading causes of traffic accidents in the capital.

Police urged drivers to take extra care on the roads and avoid swiftly changing their route, particularly without warning to fellow road users.

Drivers who flout traffic rules by making sudden deviations on the road face being hit with a Dh1,000 fine and having four penalty points on their licence.

It is the latest effort by police in the emirate to reduce incidents of quick lane changes on the roads.

Last year, awareness campaigns were carried in English, Arabic, Tagalog and  Hindi on social media as part of a two-month push to educate road users.

"Sudden lane changing and jumping another lane in front of a vehicle without using signals can result in fatal accidents and lead to traffic fines," said Brigadier Khalifa Al Khaili, director of traffic and patrols directorate.
