ABU DHABI // One person was killed and six others injured in 11 traffic accidents that took place over the Eid Al Adha holidays.

The Traffic and Patrols Directorate at Abu Dhabi Police said the accidents, which occurred between October 3 and 6, were caused by sudden swerving, burst tyres, motorists entering roads without ensuring the way was clear and inattention.

Al Ittihad, the Arabic-language sister paper of The National, reported that police launched a traffic safety campaign during Eid, in which patrols were increased around markets, abattoirs and main roads.

The Salamtak (Your Safety) campaign aimed to raise awareness about compliance with traffic regulations, excessive speeding, use of seat belts and the necessity of seating children in the back.

It also warned drivers about replying to Eid greetings via text, or by calling, while driving.

The campaign was implemented by the Security Media administration at the General Secretariat of the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior.
